Japan is known for some pretty unique things, but this by far has to be the weirdest place you can come across on your casual strolls in Tokyo. 

As a prank, a group of students lined up wearing realistic pigeon masks for a bizarre photo op. They posed in a way that the Google Street view car would walk between them making for this unexpected Google Maps street view. 

These Japanese pigeon people have since gone viral, making this a widely searched photo on the internet. 

2. The Human Lips in Sudan

Conspiracists of the internet have called it a portal or some kind of natural anomaly. However, this strange capture from Google Earth is merely an optical illusion. 

The hill formation creates an illusion of a lip due to contrasting colors of natural rocks. It is commonly known as “Lips of the desert” which locals consider to be an ode to Sudan’s rich culture. Lips hold a symbolic meaning for the people of Sudan as lip plates were very common for generations in their tribes. 

3. Nagoro “Scarecrow” Village, Japan

Nagoro is a small village in a remote valley of Japan. This sparsely populated village is one of those disturbing images on Google Earth that will leave you speechless. 

What looks like people casually chilling are actually real sized scarecrows. Creepy, right? There are over 300 life-sized scarecrows made by a local artist named Tsukimi Ayano. Each scarecrow represents a person who passed away from the village, doing daily tasks like gardening or fishing.

Nagoro is known as the “scarecrow village” and has become a popular tourist destination. It is definitely one of the top creepy Google Earth coordinates.

4. Rhyolite Nevada Ghost Town

Rhyolite, Nevada is a ghost town located near the Death Valley National Park in Las Vegas. The town was not always a ghost town. In fact, it was bustling and hustling in the early 1900s. 

In 1905, people found gold in Rhyolite and it became a crowded and functional town, practically overnight. The gold rush did not last much and by 1910 the town was completely abandoned. 

Today, eerie sculptures mark their presence in an open-air museum in Rhyolite. This features a collection of ghostly sculptures made by various international artists. 

This horror location code is one of the creepiest places on Google Earth.

5. Wheel Structures in Jordan

The Wheels of Jordan, also known as the “works of the old men” are mysterious wheel shaped structures in Azraq Oasis, Jordan. They were first spotted by pilots in the 1920s and are made of large stones that date back at least 2,000 years.

There are over 1,000 of these wheel shapes spotted in the desert, some as wide as 70 meters. There are many theories as to why these wheels exist, like a sun clock or ritualistic meanings, but no one knows the exact reason till date. 

6. The Broken Face, Antarctica

In the snow-capped terrain of Anatartica, there lies a spot that appears to be like a giant, broken human face. 

This is one of the disturbing images on Google Earth that is so remote, it makes it all the more mysterious. As people often do on the internet, many have speculated its origin and meaning.

People have called it a hidden door to an underground bunker and have even claimed to have spotted ice ships there. These theories were all dismissed as rocks and ice formations that just appeared to look like ships from certain angles. 

The true mystery of this place still remains unknown. 

7. Blood Lake, Iraq

In 2007, a red lake was discovered on Google Maps in Iraq’s Sadr City district. This lake was named the “Blood Lake” due to its obvious color similarity. 

You must be wondering how the lake got such a creepy, horror color? Well, scientists blame it on nearby factories that dump chemicals causing contamination and high concentrations of algae. Under certain conditions, if the lake water is salty, some organisms can cause a color change.

8. Island of Birds

There is one small airport on the island that is only used as a crucial emergency diversion point. This makes the island almost free from all human activities. Due to this, over time, it has become a sanctuary of millions of birds. 

Although it sounds like a wonderful place for birds, I would get freaked out if I was left on an island surrounded by just birds and no humans!

9. Giant Pink Bunny

This might just be the most unexpected thing on the list– a giant disfigured bunny, in the middle of nowhere.

In 2005, a group of artists decided to create an installation by placing a 200 foot long pink bunny on a mountain in Colletto Fava, Italy.

This piece of art was called “Hase,” and was made to look like a bunny fell from the sky and spilled its inside everywhere. The purpose of the piece was to let tourists climb and play with the giant bunny that would make you feel like miniatures. 

Eventually, due to weather conditions, the bunny started to rot and fall apart. However, you can still find some of its pieces on the mountain. 

10. The Maree Man

Coordinates: 29.5324° S, 137.4694° E

Talking about the creepiest places on google earth, the Maree Man is right on the top of the list. This is a massive geoglyph in the Australian Outback. A geoglyph is a large motif designed on the ground and this one in particular is 2.2 miles long. 

A pilot first noticed it in 1998 and it quickly became an international sensation. The artwork depicts a hunter with some sort of a stick or tool. 

No one knows who created the geoglyph or what it means. People have believed that the Marree Man was an artwork from extraterrestrial life. 

11. Pentagram in Kazakhstan

A large pentagram etched in a remote part of Kazakhstan has sparked curiosity among the explorers of the internet. 

A giant five-pointed star is 1200 feet long in diameter. Pentagram has symbolic references across many cultures and religions making people believe its roots to be more occult.

Various theories like signs of devil worship were linked with the shape, but it turned out to be nothing more than an outline of a park. 

The pentagram shaped outline is merely the remains of a walking trail park that have now faded. 

12. A Crime

In 2009, a 14-year-old boy named Kevin Barrera was left to die on railway tracks in Richmond, California. This crime was captured by Google Maps. 

For the longest time, this creepy street view location actually showed the entire crime scene with police cars and a corpse up there. Google has since removed these satellite images. This has to be one of the scariest things on Google Maps.

13. Ariel Castro’s Blurred-Out House

Ariel Castro, also infamously known as “The Monster of Cleveland,” was a kidnapper and a rapist. He kept 3 women captive for 9 years and was only arrested when one of them escaped. 

Ariel Castro was arrested and charged with multiple counts of rape, kidnapping and attempted murder. He was sentenced to serve for 1,000 years without a chance of parole. 

This Google Maps street often blurs out haunted houses and this one is one of them.  This is the same house where he kidnapped and kept the women. 

14. Abandoned Gas Masks

This is one of the creepiest places on Google Earth you will ever come across. This creepy place on Google Earth is on the site of the worst nuclear disaster in history, in Pripyat in Ukraine.

If you browse through what is now a ghost town, you will come across a room full of abandoned gas masks. What makes the whole thing more creepy is the fact that these masks are child-sized and are located inside an abandoned school. 

15. The Gates of Hell, Turkmenistan

The Gates of Hell is a giant gas crater in the middle of Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan. This gate looks like a giant hole that emits fire. 

The origin of the fire is a mystery. Theorists suggest that the crater was set on fire to burn the natural gasses, but the fire never stopped. The government of Turkmenistan has even tried to extinguish the fire but have failed. Since then this has become a very popular tourist destination. 

Its vastness makes it a very eerie addition to this list.
